PLANT PROFILE

The most important factor in successfully planning and maintaining a beautiful landscape is choosing the right plant for the location. Location refers not only to the geographic area, or planting zone, where you live, but also to the specific location within the landscape that you wish to place your selection. Research your choice of trees and plants well and take all elements of your landscape into consideration before making your purchase. To aid you in this, we are featuring Plant Profile as a regular article in our newsletter. We will give you growing specs on different trees and shrubs, as well as planting tips and even a little trivia as well. We hope you find this information helpful, and if there are specific species you want more information about - please let us know!Cedarc.JPG (14630 bytes)

INDIAN CEDAR - Cedrus Deodara

Temperature: Thrives in temperate to cold climates.

Size: Some species can grow up to 200’ so this tree is definitely not
suitable for a small yard!

Appearance: This variety of Cedar features dark green, needle like leaves about 1-1/2” in length, often with a silvery finish, and barrel-shaped cones up to 5 cm. long. When young the Indian Cedar grows in a pyramid shape with “weeping” leaf shoots. As it ages, the “head” (top) tends to become broader, eliminating the triangular shape.Deodar.JPG (21879 bytes)

Planting Tips: This tree thrives in deep, rich soil with a porous subsoil. It is fast growing and the largest of the Cedar family so choose an area that will allow for this kind of growth.

Trivia: Noah’s Ark was built of Cedar and the fleets of Egypt’s Pharaohs were built of this water, resistant timber as well. The great stones of the pyramids were supposedly rolled into place using cedar trunks and the Crusaders used them in the construction of their palaces in the Holy Lands! Truly a long lived and enduring species of tree!!!
